Marvel’s legendary Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr., danced his way into the new year and new decade. Despite only having one film release in 2019, it was a monumental year for the MCU’s inaugural superhero. Not only did Avengers: Endgame release to an overwhelming response from critics and audiences, but it surpassed the gigantic box office business of Avengers: Infinity War, while also knocking off James Cameron’s Avatar from the top spot of the worldwide box office list.
2019 was also significant for Downey Jr. as it marked the end of his historic 11-year-run as the genius, billionaire Tony Stark. In the now-famous Endgame scene, Stark sacrificed himself for the good of the universe by snapping his fingers while in possession of all the infinity stones and brought back the classic “I am Iron Man” line for his farewell scene. It left many fans heartbroken due to Downey Jr. not only being the proverbial “Godfather” of the MCU but also because he was near flawless in his portrayal of Tony Stark. However, even though some fans are still mourning the loss of Iron Man, Downey Jr. was in high spirits on New Year’s Eve, celebrating the year gone by, and welcoming the new year with some signature dance moves.
In traditional Downey Jr. fashion, the actor welcomed the new year with a very fun and lively tweet. The tweet says: “2020 ahead and 2019 behind… Let’s dance the new year in.” Accompanying the words is a collection of GIFs of the actor dancing. One of them is him dancing in South Korea, during the promotion of Endgame back in April. In addition to that one, a GIF of him dancing from a scene in Iron Man 3 can be seen, as well as one of him on the set of Sherlock Holmes.
It’s a very fun tweet that perfectly captures the actor’s humor and style. It also provides a little bit of nostalgia for fans, with there being a reminder of Iron Man in the tweet. Although, as the tweet may suggest, Downey Jr. seems to be full steam ahead with 2020 due to him already gearing up for the release of Dolittle. After postponing the film’s release date from April to January 17, 2020, the marketing for the film has begun with the release of the trailer and other promotional materials coming out in recent months.
2020 will be the first year of the post-Marvel era for Downey Jr., and hopefully, the former Tony Stark can continue dancing his way to success with Dolittle. The film has had a troubled production, with major reshoots taking place in the spring of 2019. So the signs are not looking good, but with the star power of the Iron Man actor, and the fact he is reuniting with Tom Holland, who voices Jip, a dog in the film, might be enough to bring the actor his first hit after Endgame.
