Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller later shot some test footage for Deadpool to impress Fox, which did little to push it forward. When a mystery party leaked this footage online, it soon became a viral hit and convinced the studio to greenlight an R-rated take. This was a very, very wise choice, as Deadpool ended up grossing over $700 million worldwide in 2016, making it the highest-grossing X-Men movie. There’s rarely been a more perfect combination of character and actor than Deadpool and Reynolds, which is a big reason it was so popular. The actor quickly returned for Deadpool 2, which proved to be just as successful.
While fans wait for word on Wade’s next outing, here’s where Deadpool 2 can be watched online. Sadly, not only is Deadpool 2 not available on Netflix or Prime, it’s never likely to be since the Fox/Disney merger. Its R rating also makes it unlikely to end up on Disney+ anytime soon, but Deadpool 2 can currently be viewed on Hulu through Cinemax’s Max Go app. It can also be rented or purchased through YouTube, Google Play or iTunes.
Following the merger, it will be interesting to see how the Deadpool franchise develops. Fox tested the waters of PG-13 with Once Upon A Deadpool, a re-edited version of Deadpool 2 featuring toned-down language and violence, and framed by a Princess Bride-style narrative device. The result was an enjoyable but utterly watered-down take on the character, and it’s hard to see the character retaining the same appeal if future projects force him into a PG-13 box.
The next movie is in development at Marvel Studios, so assuming Deadpool is allowed to maintain his edge, the future looks bright for the series. Deadpool 2’s stellar box-office shows there’s still a major audience for the character, and seeing him interact with some the MCU’s major players like Spider-Man or Doctor Strange could be a lot of fun.
