Here’s a recap of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia season 9 episode “Mac And Dennis Buy A Timeshare,” where… well, it’s in the title. It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia debuted on FX in 2005 and is a sitcom that centers on the gang who run Paddy’s Pub, including Mac, Dee, Dennis, and Charlie. The show was by design a scrappy, low budget affair with a focus on pitch-black comedy. The first season attracted a small cult, but its poor numbers nearly saw it cancelled. The crew had to attract a star name for season 2 to get a greenlight, which saw Danny DeVito (Jumanji: The Next Level) enter the pub as Dee and Dennis’ “father” Frank.
This was the magic ingredient that made the series click, and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia became a hit. Despite the inherent darkness of the show, it’s run for fourteen seasons thus far and there’s no sign of it ending yet. While It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia positively revels in breaking taboos and being incredibly politically incorrect, it seems to get away with things other shows wouldn’t because the joke is always on the gang. All of their evil, nasty schemes tend to backfire horribly and they’re often back at square one.
Case in point would be It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia season 9 episode 4 “Mac And Dennis Buy A Timeshare.” The episode opens with Dee giving the gang a pitch on an energy drink called Invigaron, which is clearly a scam. While Charlie is interested in learning more, Dennis and Mac mock Dee and set out to attend the same presentation she attended to score free golf clubs. They brag they won’t be suckered like her, which is when the title card “Mac And Dennis Buy A Timeshare” pops up.
Dee and Charlie soon learn from Frank - who for unexplained reasons spends the episode trapped in a playground coil in his underpants - that it’s a pyramid scheme. In typical It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia style, Mac and Dennis attend the presentation bragging they “won’t get got,” and the salesman ends up selling them three weeks in a timeshare. Dee and Charlie later make a presentation video - which is Lethal Weapon 6 levels of bad - to nice but dim soldier Ben and Roddy Piper’s (They Live) Da’Maniac. Ben isn’t interested but Da’Maniac steals some cases.
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s “Mac And Dennis Buy A Timeshare” then follow the two groups trying to foist their problems onto Ben The Soldier by trying to “trigger his PTSD.” It turns out Ben had a stress free time in the army so he’s unaffected. The ending sees them all go back to Invigaron and buying their way out of their contracts, thinking they got a good deal when they were all scammed again. It’s quickly revealed Dee could have been rich if she waited a little longer too, as it turns out Da’Maniac - who moved into Mac and Dennis’ place thinking its a timeshare - is a hell of a salesman.
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s “Mac And Dennis Buy A Timeshare” ends with the gang thinking Frank somehow scammed them - while he’s still trapped in the coil as kids play around him.
