Cary Fukunaga, the director of the upcoming James Bond film No Time to Die, teases what fans can expect to see from Christoph Waltz’s return as Ernst Stavro Blofeld. This movie will mark Daniel Craig’s fifth and final go-around as Bond following his turns in Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre. The first official trailer for No Time to Die dropped today and gave eagerly-awaiting fans a glimpse at some of the classic 007 action in the film, what to expect from the story, along with brief glimpses at some brand new and returning characters. Amongst the wide variety of returning faces was Christoph Waltz, confirming earlier reports that he’d be reprising his role as Blofeld from Spectre in the upcoming film.

Back in 2015, Spectre saw the return of Sam Mendes to the director’s chair for a Bond film following his spectacular success with Skyfall. But, the followup film couldn’t quite match the success of its predecessor. One of the biggest criticisms of the film came from the lack of screen time for Waltz’s villainous character, Franz Oberhauser, who was later revealed in a final twist to be criminal mastermind Ernst Blofeld. Unfortunately, Waltz’s talents were underused and his character, despite being an iconic Bond villain by the end, fizzled out. Thankfully, it looks like No Time to Die will finally be fleshing out Blofeld and giving Waltz some much-needed screen time to bring this villainous character to life.

During an interview with Empire, director Cary Fukunaga broke down the first trailer for No Time to Die and teased what fans can expect from Waltz’s return. He explained that “Blofeld is an iconic character in all the Bond films,” adding in that, “he’s in prison, but he certainly can’t be done yet, right?” Although the interaction in the trailer between Bond and Blofeld is brief, it clearly holds some significance to the movie’s overall plot. Fukunaga then went on to say, “what could he be doing from there and what nefarious, sadistic things does he have planned for James Bond and the rest of the world?”

Although Fukunaga doesn’t reveal too much, clearly avoiding any and all spoilers, it does sound like Waltz will certainly have more to work with as Blofeld in this film. Although he isn’t the main villain in No Time to Die, as that part belongs to Rami Malek’s supervillain Safin, Blofeld will surely have something wicked up his sleeve for Bond. Hopefully, his villain will be more intriguing and exciting for audiences to watch than he was in Spectre.

Waltz is a phenomenal actor who can play a villain extremely well, and hopefully, Fukunaga has something thrilling planned with his character in No Time to Die. Considering the trailer released today was the first official one for the film, there’s still plenty of time to speculate on what Waltz’s role will be in the overall narrative before the film releases next April. But, with Fukunaga at the helm and a punchy script from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, it’s sure to be an unforgettable performance.
