James Gunn continues to hype up King Shark’s character in The Suicide Squad. The production is officially underway and is set to start filming this September in Atlanta. With most of the plot details being kept under lock and key, fans have slowly been introduced to some of the new and returning cast members over the past couple of months. As of now, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, and Viola Davis will all be returning to their respective roles from David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. As far as new castmembers go, Idris Elba and Storm Reid have also joined the cast, but their roles are still yet to be confirmed. It’s been rumored that Elba will be playing Bronze Tiger, but an official announcement remains to be made.
Gunn’s The Suicide Squad has started to shape into an interesting feature. Many of the latest characters that have been added to the roster are lesser-known villains in the DC Comics universe, namely Polka-Dot Man, Peacemaker, and Ratcatcher. Gunn has also been hesitant to confirm whether the film is a total sequel or reboot, but reports have confirmed that the film is still set in the DCEU. One thing is for certain, though, Gunn sure is excited about King Shark.
The director took to Instagram to share a King Shark-themed arcade, properly dubbed the King Sharkade, that was gifted to the cast and crew from Microsoft. Gunn thanked the company for setting them up “with a #KingSharkade for the cast and crew’s downtime during pre-production and production of #TheSuicideSquad.” And what else is hidden away in this arcade that’s already filled with hints and easter eggs? A Guardians of the Galaxy-themed pinball machine. Check out all of the images below:
It’s no surprise that Gunn knows exactly what fans of his want to see, and this isn’t his first go-around dropping King Shark hints either. A couple of weeks ago, the director was also surprised with a couple of King Shark-themed cakes for his birthday, further fueling the fire as to how big of a role the character will have in the film. Originally, Michael Rooker was in talks to play the character but has since denied involvement. Even though fans still have to wait for an official announcement, it’s clear that King Shark will be a big part of Gunn’s production.
King Shark’s role in The Suicide Squad will mark his first live-action film appearance, and Gunn seems like the perfect fit to bring this character to life. Considering his clear admiration for the character, along with his charismatic style of filmmaking, it’s a sure thing that this DC production is in good hands. Not to mention, Gunn’s nod to Guardians of the Galaxy in the King Sharkade shows that he hasn’t forgotten about his Marvel fanbase either. He loves and appreciates properties from both DC and Marvel comics, and he continues to show that he’s putting just as much time and dedication into The Suicide Squad as he would for his Guardians franchise.
