Filmmaker James Gunn has nothing but praise for Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, as well as Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts. This praise comes a week after reports surfaced on how negotiations between Disney and Sony over the Spider-Man film licensing rights were falling apart. The failed negotiations between the two companies would result in the character of Spider-Man getting pulled from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
There was a lot of fan outrage over the news, although many haven’t yet given up hope that negotiations will continue and the two companies will eventually strike a deal. However, there is still a very real chance that Spider-Man may have to move on without the MCU and vice versa. The good news is that Holland has said he’ll still play Spider-Man in future films for Sony. And although Watts isn’t attached to direct the next Spider-Man film, he has not expressed any nastiness during the ongoing feud. Both men have remained professional throughout the Disney vs. Sony chaos.
A fan asked Gunn about the situation on Instagram. Gunn responded by praising both Holland Watts for maintaining their composure during this difficult time. Check out the response below.
Gunn is currently staying busy by writing and directing The Suicide Squad soft reboot for DC. But he will return to the MCU with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is reportedly scheduled to start production in 2021. Gunn is also no stranger to controversy. After a series of old tweets surfaced, Disney fired him. However, public outrage ensued, with even the cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies weighing in, and Disney agreed to rehire him. Gunn’s vision for the Guardians of the Galaxy films has made him popular with the Marvel fanbase. It’s also likely the DC fanbase will get a boost from his involvement with The Suicide Squad film.
In the meantime, Gunn is right: both Holland and Watts have acted like class acts during the chaotic news cycle over the Spider-Man film rights. Some have compared Holland as the child in a divorce between two parents. Whatever happens, though, he will continue to be the Spider-Man that fans know and love. As for Watts, he is reportedly attached to the Warner Bros. film project Methuselah, a film about an ageless Biblical man who has lived for over 400 years. It remains to be seen whether Watts will return to direct Spider-Man: Homecoming 3.
