JWoww’s ex-husband Roger Mathews attacked critics who have shamed him over the fake cigarettes integrated into his kids’ Halloween costumes. The Jersey Shore dad quickly responded to the internet haters.
Mathews posted photos of his children, Meilani and Greyson, as they embarked on trick-or-treating. In the Instagram pictures, both kids were clad in leather jackets and all-black clothing. They were channeling the final scene in Grease, in which Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta (playing Sandy and Danny) danced in similar outfits while singing “You’re the One That I Want.” While the pictures of the children were adorable, the internet quickly erupted into a frenzy because Meilani and Greyson had cigarettes between their lips - just like the characters in the film.
The controversy quickly grew out of concern that the children, ages 5 and 3, would be too impressionable to have exposure to cigarettes. With so many kids succumbing to the vaping epidemic and other forms of media and peer pressure, fans and haters alike spoke out against the proud dad. Mathews was quick to clap back via Instagram and let the naysayers know exactly how he felt about the criticism. “Please comment on the fake cigarettes so I can block you. Please,” he wrote. “They nailed the role and if you don’t get it you most certainly would never get us. #Peace,” he added in his caption. However, the criticisms continued to come.
While Mathews and his ex-wife Farley have been ridiculed and chided due to their hard-partying ways on Jersey Shore, people have been especially concerned for their kids. True, the photos don’t depict the children in any immediate danger. Not only that, but just as many fans of the couple have defended the use of toy cigarettes over real ones. One follower even defended Mathews’ choice to allow his children fake cigarettes, as opposed to the weapons that most other kids play with during the Halloween holiday. In the end, the father of two is determined not to allow the detractors into his head.
It’s kind for people to care enough about anyone’s children to question their health and well-being. It’s also surprising that so many people took issue with the fake cigarettes in the children’s mouths, but completely missed the opportunity to bad-mouth the fact that brother and sister were portraying boyfriend and girlfriend. There’s no need for celebrities to continue to pander to internet trolls when it comes to their families. Feeding into the criticism is an individual’s prerogative, but so is disabling the comments feature on a social media profile. For JWoww and Roger, as long as their kids had a happy Halloween, that’s all that matters.
