A new Joker movie teaser poster confirms the first teaser trailer is set to drop tomorrow. Joaquin Phoenix takes over the iconic role of Batman villain The Joker in the new movie from director Todd Phillips, a film which promises to be an origin story set in the early ’80s, and done in the style of a gritty cop thriller.

The now-famous Joker character first appeared at Batman’s nemesis in DC Comics way back in 1940. Cesar Romero later took on the task of playing the character in the classic 1960s Batman TV show. In Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman, Oscar-winner Jack Nicholson played Joker to Michael Keaton’s Caped Crusader. Arguably the most memorable depiction of Joker came however in 2008’s The Dark Knight, with Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning portrayal (tragically, Ledger died before claiming the Oscar). Jared Leto controversially played the Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad, the film that also introduced the character’s comic book paramour Harley Quinn. Mark Hamill has also received accolades for his vocal depiction of the character in Batman animated properties.

With Joker returning to screens in a new incarnation later this year, Todd Phillips has dropped a new teaser poster and also confirmed that the first teaser trailer for the movie is set drop tomorrow. See the poster below:

Thanks to various set leaks, fans have already gotten a healthy glimpse of what Phillips has in store for his take on the notorious Joker. Anticipation is high as fans wait to see what the Oscar-nominated Phoenix does with his depiction of the character. Nicholson’s performance as the character in Burton’s Batman divided fans, with some finding the performance too comedic. When Ledger took on the role in The Dark Knight, the result was arguably the definitive take on the comic book villain. Leto was up against Ledger’s legacy when he tackled the role in Suicide Squad, and the bar may have been set too high, as the actor’s depiction was met with loud derision by many fans.

Given the iconic nature of the Joker character, there is bound to be loads of debate about whether Phoenix’s new take lives up to expectations. Overall, Phillips and company are expected to take the character in a much more realistic and gritty direction as Warner Bros. tries to veer away from the Zack Snyder DCEU era and give individual characters more of a specific treatment rather than trying to shoehorn them into various team-up movies. Whatever Phillips and Phoenix have in store, fans will get their first real glimpse when the first Joker teaser trailer hits.
