A new chapter of the campaign to see the “Snyder Cut” of Justice League released began yesterday, with advocates flooding the comments on HBO Max announcements. The ambitious team-up movie was originally designed to be part one of a two-part story. One which would have pit various DC Comics heroes against the otherworldly threat of Darkseid. Following Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, the DCEU was set to be directed by Zack Snyder and pay off numerous threads he’d set up in the previous installments. Unfortunately, a personal tragedy meant he had to step away during production.
Directorial duties then passed to Joss Whedon (The Avengers), who helmed extensive reshoots and made numerous changes to the plot. The results proved underwhelming to critics and fans alike, with Justice League displaying a tone incongruous to not only the rest of the DCEU but how the film was originally conceived. In the wake of the film’s underwhelming reception, numerous fans joined forces to call for Snyder’s original version to be released. That campaign has raged consistently in the years since - with star Jason Momoa supporting the movement and fans most recently purchasing a billboard at New York Comic-Con.
With yesterday marking some huge announcements regarding Warner’s upcoming HBO Max streaming service, “Snyder Cut” campaigners emerged ready. The bulk of the new service revolved around the official release date and details of its extensive library. Among them, it was confirmed that the entirety of Rick and Morty would be available. Wasting little time, fans mobilized on social media in order to reply to each and every HBO Max announcement. Posted on Twitter by user RTSnyderCut, though the campaign was committed to being polite and respectful, they were firm that the company be left under no illusions regarding what they wanted - for Snyder’s original vision for Justice League to be made available among the catalog of offerings. The full rallying cry can be seen below:
Such vocal outpourings are already underway, among the initial Q&A post seen directly above and many more. The streaming service will include every DC movie (including Joker) upon its launch in May 2020. As well as that, a number of fresh DC-inspired offerings are in the works - including a television adaptation of Green Lantern. As such, HBO Max looks increasingly to be setting itself up as a direct competition to Disney+ and, to a lesser degree, Netflix. In terms of the former, they will also stream every MCU movie made so far and equally branch out into television series. The very first of such projects - Falcon and The Winter Soldier - is already filming.
Given everything, it would make a certain kind of sense to include the “Snyder Cut” of Justice League among what’s offered by HBO Max. Each week new evidence of the film being largely complete continues to emerge. Equally, more than just passionate fans jumping on the bandwagon, with various Justice League cast-members and even Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld pledging support. At this point, it isn’t even about retconning the entire DCEU but merely seeing what Snyder originally intending and confirming whether or not it’s an improvement. As such, the intense support could easily be channeled into subscription numbers should a director’s cut of Justice League be included. Whether or not these latest efforts - and the campaign as a whole - ultimately bears fruit, however, will, as ever, remain to be seen.
