A new report says Warner Bros. has no imminent plans for a Justice League Snyder Cut announcement. The Snyder Cut has been a trending topic for the last week approaching the second anniversary of the theatrical release of Justice League.
Zack Snyder and members of the cast and crew have been dropping teases on a near-daily basis, culminating in Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot tweeting support for Snyder’s original version of the movie, and Snyder has also taken to Twitter to use the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut hashtag for the first time himself.
The hashtag has cleared 400k uses on Twitter in a single day and is one of the top trends worldwide, but this new report from The Hollywood Reporter citing a Warner Bros. insider saying the social media buzz isn’t leading to an actual announcement.
While some supporters may be disappointed in this development, it was incredibly unlikely that Snyder and the rest of the Justice League cast and crew were teasing an actual announcement this whole time. In all likelihood, Snyder is using the social media momentum as an opportunity to finally negotiate a solution to the Snyder Cut situation. Despite the lack of announcement plans, Snyder and the cast joining fans in making an open demand for the cut means this Snyder Cut story is far from over.
Another unnamed Warner Bros. executive told the Wall Street Journal there were no plans to release the Snyder Cut in July 2018, but circumstances have clearly changed since them. There’s ample evidence the Snyder Cut has a significant level of completion and now almost the entire main cast has joined the chorus of voices asking for the release of Snyder’s original Justice League vision.
Since Snyder’s departure from Justice League, DC Films has headed in a different direction, moving away from a connected universe in favor of more self-contained movies or completely separate universe altogether, like Joker, or Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which are both expected to exist in their own continuities without any connection to previous films.
Whatever the solution for the Snyder Cut is, it seems doubtful it’ll pick up where Snyder left off, although since the continuity established by Snyder has been in a virtual standstill since his departure, a deal for his return is still hypothetically in the cards. The more realistic scenario seems to be for WB to utilize the Snyder Cut for HBO Max, but to have Snyder and the cast and hundreds of thousands of fans openly demanding the Snyder Cut is certainly unprecedented territory and we will need to see how the story continues to develop in this new chapter of the Snyder Cut saga.
