Kate Middleton says she did “hypnobirthing” for her three kids. The Duchess of Cambridge opened up with intimate details about how she birthed her three heirs to the British throne.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s revealing interview is one of several steps to appear more down-to-Earth that she and the remaining royals have taken in the wake of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle scaling back their duties in January 2020. Her father-in-law, Prince Charles, also showed his more contemporary side recently by naming singer Katy Perry ambassador of the British Asian Trust charity after meeting her in Mumbai last year. Aside from making the rest of the family as relatable as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,  the disclosures Kate Middleton made on the podcast while promoting her groundbreaking survey called 5 Big Questions on the Under Fives, could potentially help other expectant mothers with their pregnancy woes.

So what is hypnobirthing? Middleton explained the process during her revealing interview on the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast (via Yahoo), hosted by bestselling author Giovanna Fletcher. During the revealing discussion, Duchess Kate spoke openly about labor and delivery. She said the process of using mind over matter really helped her enjoy labor quite a lot. Basic hypnotherapy involves various relaxation and self-hypnosis techniques to help relax the body before and during labor and birth. There are even classes that teach participants to practice and use a combination of music, visualization, positive thinking and words and even prompts from their partners to relax and control their pain.

The Duchess of Cambridge was plagued with powerful morning sickness throughout each of her three pregnancies, as she stated to Fletcher: “It was through hyperemesis that I really realized the power of the mind over the body because I really had to try everything and everything to try and help me through it.” She went on to explain the process and its efficacy in her life: “I saw the power of it really, the meditation and the deep breathing and things like that - that they teach you in hypnobirthing - when I was really sick and actually I realized that this was something I could take control of, I suppose, during labor.”

Now that the onus of the royal duties rests on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as well as Prince Charles, interviews like the one Kate Middleton gave on the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast will be more essential. Given the highly publicized nature of Duchess Kate’s discomfort during pregnancy, it’s not unusual that she would seek out a new method of coping with crippling morning sickness and potentially painful birth. While hypnobirthing may be a bit on the fringe of what the royal family is used to, it seems to have helped her deliver Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, as well as Prince George - the future king of England. Now that she’s shed a light on the process, it’s highly likely that other women will employ this technique, simply because of who’s endorsing it.
