iPhone shipments fell by 15% year-on-year in China during the first quarter of the year according to Counterpoint Research data. Apple saw its market share in the country fall from 12.3% in Q1 2016 to 10.1% Q1 2017. The main reason for the fall at a time when smartphone sales in China are still growing was far stronger competition from local brands … Oppo saw its shipments soar by 81%, Vivo by 60% and Huawei by 25%....

This hasn’t taken long: recall one of the early winners of funding from the infamous ‘iFund’ venture capital stash designed to boost Apps development? It was ngmoco, of course, and now that hugely succesful company is set to be acquired by Japanese social games network, DeNA Co. The $403 million purchase follows August’s news that Google Ventures invested $5 million in the developer. “ngmoco will lead DeNA’s efforts in the Western world, including launching a new western smartphone version of the incredibly successful Social Games Network, Mobage (we say “Mo-ba-gae”) that we’re building together with DeNA,” the games developer says in a note on its site....

We’ve just received word that Virgin Mobile will be carrying the iPhone 5 next week on its Beyond Talk plans with unlimited 3G/4G LTE data and messaging starting at $35/month (with $5 discount for auto-payments). The 16GB iPhone $549.99 pricing plan + $30/month for unlimited data is extremely competitive with what’s out there but this comes late in the update cycle. As Apple’s legal battle with Qualcomm continues to drag on, the United States International Trade Commission recommended yesterday that a trade judge find Apple guilty of infringing upon at least one of Qualcomm’s patents. As reported by Reuters, this decision from the ITC doesn’t constitute a ruling, but rather a mere suggestion for judges. In many cases, however, the judges often follow what the ITC decides. Qualcomm has requested an import ban on infringing iPhones....

Some users on Reddit and Twitter are reporting that iTunes and the App Store are down. Other are able to access normally, suggesting that the issue is either small-scale or intermittent. Apple’s status page is not yet showing an issue, though it is common for Apple to be very slow to update the page. The issue doesn’t seem to be specific to any one country, with reports from the U.S., Europe and Asia (including me in the UK) … The iTunes store is giving a ‘cannot complete your request’ message, while the App Store is proving unresponsive for those affected....

Apple’s official list of availability for iTunes Match by country has not been updated to include Poland, Hungary, or any additional markets, but currently lists 55 countries with access to the service. Local reports claim the service is available for 24.99 euros in Hungary, which is on par with pricing in other markets....
